drawing inspiration from labels such as warp, mego, chain reaction, and touch, deep glens merges the spirit of bedroom electronic composition with the perspective of a lifelong studio engineer. deep glens' debut album, "earn grips," was constructed from improvisations within custom-built software environments, blurring the boundaries between composition, performance, and system design. the material later evolved into a live set documented on "LIVE 2023-07-28," recorded in chicago.
In december 2024, autechre featured tracks from that performance during their bbc 6 music artist residency. the duo subsequently invited bullion to join four dates of their 2025 north american tour, introducing deep glens to audiences already attuned to left field forms of electronic music.
on the new album, "carver," bullion shifts his focus from software systems to physical media, developing a tape-based approach inspired by william burroughs' cut-up technique. hundreds of analog tape loops containing rhythmic, harmonic, and textural fragments were recorded, spliced, and randomly selected before being reshaped through speed manipulation, filtering, and other studio processes. the resulting compositions occupy a space between chance and intention, fragmentation and coherence.
beneath its technical methods, carver is concerned with a more fundamental question: how meaning is assembled over the course of a finite life. drawing from accumulated experience, memory, and accident, the album reflects on aging, uncertainty, and the human impulse to create something new from whatever materials are on hand.
